POLICE officers will be patrolling the streets of Herefordshire in brand new stab-resistant and ballistic-protective vests from now on.

The issue of the new vests to police officers, special constables, community support officers and some members of police staff, follows extensive research and user trials.

West Mercia police has placed a £1m order for the 2,600 vests which will have been delivered to all officers within the next few months.

"We're delighted that these vests are now arriving throughout the force and we will complete the supply process as quickly as possible," said Jon Wilks, West Mercia police safety co-ordinator.

"All new staff joining the force in the future will be measured for vests as part of the standard uniform process.

"The vest was selected following extensive research and local user trials of three different types by beat managers, response officers, family protection unit staff, dog handlers, custody and CID officers."

Supt Anthony Bangham welcomed the arrival of the protection to Herefordshire.

"The force and the Police Authority have been working hard to provide this additional protection for our staff as quickly as possible," he said.

"The vest finally chosen is practical as well asproviding a high degree of protection."
