TEXT messages of support have been a great boost to a youth worker from Worcester who is attempting to row across the Atlantic Ocean.

In an e-mail to his supporters, Richard Wood, who has so far rowed around 200 miles, said he has been sent more than 100 text messages via his website - www.oceanrowing.com

"These are hugely encouraging," said Mr Wood, of Northwick Road.

"Thank you to everyone who has sent me one so far.

Long haul

"Do not stop, as it's a real morale booster. Snippets of news, jokes and general encouragement really helps. It's a long haul, but keep going with me."

Mr Wood left La Gomera in the Canary Islands for the gruelling 3,000-mile voyage to Barbados on Tuesday, January 20 with 13 other competitors in the Ocean Rowing Society Atlantic Rowing Regatta 2004 and is currently averaging around 32 miles a day.

"I can hardly believe I've been at sea for a week," added Mr Wood. "The time's gone pretty fast."

And he remains in high spirits.

"Rowing a three-quarter ton boat over a distance longer than a marathon may yet prove there is life in the old sea dog yet."

Mr Wood took up the challenge to raise money for Worcester's St Richard's Hospice, which cares for people with life-limiting illnesses.
