EVEN though Scotland does not charge student fees, the Scottish New Labour MPs come charging over Hadrian's Wall to the rescue of Scottish-born and educated Prime Minister Tony Blair, in a most blatant hypocritical political way by voting on the student top-up fees in England.

The reported support for the higher tuition fees from New Labour MP Mike Foster, himself an ex-lecturer, and Dr Matt Lamb a previous New Labour candidate and current lecturer, will of course result in higher debts to be incurred by all future students.

This of course would be in line with the local New Labour group's "I'm all right Jack" policies on fees and expenses.

It was members of this group who, around February 2002, tabled a motion for a threefold increase for councillors' attendance allowances.

This was at a time when Worcester city's finances, partly due to the previous administration, were in a critical position, and essential services were being cut.
