DROITWICH Rugby Club moved up to third in Midlands Three West (South) with a fine 16-13 win over Stratford at the Memorial Ground on Saturday.

With a victory vital for both sides to keep in touch with the top two this was always going to be an enthralling encounter.

Droitwich, however, got off to the worst possible start as a speculative pass was intercepted by the visitors' winger in the first minute to score.

They hit back quickly, though, and regained their composure. Droitwich launched an assault on the Stratford line, a good break by Gareth Knight saw the forwards pile in for veteran back row forward Jon Andrews to go over. Matt Blackmore kicked the tricky conversion.

Droitwich then seemed to have the upper hand and used the stiff breeze to force Stratford back into their own 22. This pressure resulted in a series of penalties with Blackmore converting two attempts. Stratford were not to be outdone, however, and drove deep into Droitwich's half, forcing a series of attacking scrums, to see their number eight power over. Crucially the conversion was again missed.

The second half saw both sides up the tempo and produce some fine attacking rugby, although this was matched by excellent defence on both counts.

Stratford drew level with a penalty, but Droitwich again raised their game to give Blackmore the chance to again take the lead.

The final 10 minutes saw Stratford throw everything at Droitwich, but fine defence, with Jon Fidoe outstanding, saw the home side maintain their slender advantage.
