A HISTORY of Upton-upon-Severn, written by a rector's wife in the 19th Century, has been given 21st Century treatment by being copied onto compact disc.

It is the work of town councillor Jackie Surtees, who is also responsible for setting up and running Upton's official website.

It took her many hours over several weeks to scan every page of The Nation in the Parish or Records of Upton-on-Severn by Emily M Lawson.

The illustrated history was first published in 1884 and covers Upton through the times of the Romans, the Plantagenets, the Civil War, and the cholera epidemic.

There is even a chapter on Upton's ghost and one on the castle of Hanley.

"It starts by mentioning the lump of basalt that came down in the Ice Age and can still be seen at the corner of School Lane and Court Street," said Mrs Surtees.

"I bought my copy from Alnwick, Northumberland, after tracking it down on the internet.

"I think there was one other copy in the UK and two more in the USA."

A sample page and illustration from the book can be found on the website at www.upton.uk.net

Copies of the CD are available at £12.75, including post and packing, from Mrs J Surtees, 20 Backfields Lane, Upton-upon-Severn, WR8 OJH.
