YOUR correspondent, Mark Brunner (You Say, Saturday, January 10) apparently fails to perceive the revenue-raising potential in having headteachers fine parents for the failure of their offspring to attend school.

Once the principle is established it could easily be extended to cover all manner of misdemeanours and shortcomings.

The enthusiasm of headteachers for this activity is bound to vary and the appointment of an inspectorate to keep head teachers up to scratch and ensure they raise their quota in fines is a logical progression.

Meanwhile, what with this, speed cameras and the myriad of other officials empowered to inflict on the spot fines we are fast becoming what my generation might have termed "a nation of little Hitlers. "

As I approach my four-score years, I shake my head sadly and ask myself: "Was this really worth fighting for?"
