Colwall Primary School is hoping to launch a scheme to reduce morning traffic congestion at its gates.

The school intends to follow in the footsteps of Welland Primary, which has operated a 'walking bus' scheme successfully since October.

Parents drop off their children at designated points along a planned route some distance from the school. A team of volunteers then lead the procession of children to school on foot.

Colwall head Richard Southall said: "Our school has grown in size from 70 pupils to 200 since I've been here, so the roads are pretty jam-packed with cars. We have been trying to organise a plan to get cars away from the school for some time.

"We know that the walking bus scheme has been working well at Welland Primary, so thought it was a good idea."

The school has sent letters to parents, telling them about the plan and asking for volunteers to walk the children to school.

Anna Byers, a parent governor at the school, said: "We hope to launch the scheme in the spring. The kids are very keen on the idea and it will be great fun as long as we have the support of parents."
