A "NO modern dress" door policy ensured an evening with a twist for the Napoleonic Association's annual ball.

The group's event saw battle-hardened rivals downing their muskets and ales, as a temporary truce was called at the Fownes Hotel in City Walls Road, Worcester.

The might of the French and British armies mingling together with gentry from early 19th Century Britain and the odd Roman centurion, Roundhead and Second World War US Marine also popped in.

Around 200 people turned up for Saturday's spectacular ball.

The evening centred on British tradition, with folk music and a wandering minstrel adding to the historical sights and sounds.

But although the NA group, which formed in 1975, is keen on accurate representations, the soldiers normal battle food of dried meat and stew was definitely off the menu.
