WORCESTER shoppers and commuters could benefit from an extended car park if plans to amalgamate the Pitchcroft and nearby The Moors car park are given the go-ahead.

The scheme proposes to link the two Worcester car parks by a vehicle ramp, which will result in a 345-space single site.

This is only 11 more parking spaces than are currently available, but city council parking manager Paul Kyte hopes it will encourage more motorists to park in the little-used Moors car park, off The Moors road.

Mr Kyte said the Moors car park is only used to 50 per cent of its capacity.

"I think the view of many motorists is that they're either not aware that the Moors car park is there, or that they perceive that it's too far away from the city centre. It is in fact a matter of a few paces from the furthest parts of the well-used Pitchcroft site," said Mr Kyte.

"If Pitchcroft floods, drivers can use spaces on the Moors by opening the gates."

Engineers plan to place a lockable gate where The Moors entrance is.

Mr Kyte said extra security measures such as lighting would also be looked at.

"We have CCTV already," he said.

The idea, which is in its infancy stages, will be put before Worcester City Council's Cabinet tomorrow. If the cabinet approves the scheme, a planning application will be submitted.

The cabinet is being recommended to approve the scheme when it meets.
