A LEGAL dispute between a racehorse owner from Colwall and a Cork bookmaker was covered in the Malvern News a century ago under the headline 'Irish Betting Case'.

The defendant was Rowland C B Cave, of Barton Court, also the promoter of Colwall Park Races.

The plaintiff was John Reese, a "well-known turf commission agent and proprietor of a stud farm near Cork".

The two were in dispute over the sum of £104, which arose out of some bets placed between them.

Mr Reese alleged that a cheque sent to him by Mr Cave to settle the debt had not been honoured. But he was out of luck. The judge said that because the debt was the result of a gaming transaction, "the action was untenable". Judgment was given in favour of Mr Cave, with costs.
