IS 1979 the year of commercial comeback in Great Malvern? That was the question being asked by the Gazette 25 years ago.
The paper noted signs of a commercial renaissance after months of stagnation in which the town centre had lost out to the development of Barnards Green and Malvern Link.
A number of new shops opened in the run-up to Christmas, among them a men's fashion shop, Mr Jukes, in Graham Road, and, for the ladies, Linda Woof in Worcester Road.
Two bric-a-brac/antique shops, Bright and Beautiful in Church Street and Chel's Curios on Belle Vue Terrace, also opened.
On Abbey Road, the wine and spirit seller Lennon's had recently set up at Lyttelton House, while on Belle Vue Terrace the Manders the chemist opened a health food shop at the back of its premises. This last business, the Bran Tub, is still with us, albeit now on Worcester Road.
