HEREFORD'S David Park faced a battle to beat the cut in the second round of the South African Airways Open at Erinvale today.

The Burghill Valley member shot a one over par 73 yesterday to leave him tied in 75th position after a round that contained three bogeys and two birdies. Park was one of the later starters today.

Scotland's Alistair Forsyth, however, stormed his way onto the leaderboard in picture-perfect conditions in the early stages of the second round.

Forsyth, who sat nicely just behind the leaders after a first round 68, made the most of an early start to card three early birdies and move into second place on seven under after 13 holes.

That was one shot off the leader Brett Rumford, who equalled the course record with a 64 in the first round and was among the late starters today.

Starting from the 10th, Forsyth parred the first six holes before birdies on 16 and 17 took him to the turn in 34. He started the front nine, playing a lot easier in the good conditions, with two pars before another birdie on the par five third.
