Hamish Ellwood has taken up the post as head of junior school at the Downs School, Colwall.
Previously deputy head of an independent school in Hampshire, Mr Ellwood is in charge of pupils aged four to seven.
"I'm having a fantastic time," he said. "My year two class is great and so is the whole of the school. The staff have been incredibly supportive. Everyone is pitching in to do their best."
Despite only taking up the post less than two weeks ago, Mr Ellwood is already introducing lots of different things to the curriculum, including French, more PE lessons and more information technology.
Headteacher Alastair Ramsay said: "This is another extremely exciting stage in the development of The Downs."
