A scheme which encourages bed and breakfasts to become environmentally-friendly is set to expand.

Herefordshire Nature Trust is hoping the success of its Growing Green Tourism Award Scheme will continue in 2004.

Rachel Smith, from the trust, said it only began the scheme last May and it has already proved popular.

"In 2004 we are hoping to attract more B&B businesses," she said.

"The idea is that we will offer awards to any B&Bs in the county that do their best for the environment by doing things like planting trees in the gardens and using low energy light bulbs."

She added the awards would offer businesses added publicity and so attract more guests.

So far, 17 B&Bs have achieved their first award, including Little Marcle Court, near Ledbury.

Owners Irene and Rick Skellam have turned their 15-acre site into a wildlife haven, incorporating an environmentally friendly willow filter system to clean the waste water from their holiday accommodation units.
