BOLLARDS designed to stop motorists hitting newly-extended kerbs in a Kidderminster street have been damaged after both were apparently run down by drivers, it has been claimed.measures to flag up the new kerbs at the junction of Plimsoll Street and Park Street have failed, say angry motorists.

The two black and white posts had done nothing to stop drivers mounting the new kerbs at the junction of Plimsoll Street and Park Street, said Doreen Finch, whose husband's car suffered £1,000 worth of damage after being involved in a collision with the kerb before bollards were erected.

Both bollards were damaged less than a month after they were installed by highways bosses.

Mrs Finch, of Stourbridge Road, said: "The bollards don't work - they need to be fluorescent or a warning sign needs to be put up to let drivers know. Drivers will not see them in bad light."

She said her husband, George's car had struck one of the kerbs, as had the car of a driver ahead of him, last September.

He then saw another car do the same thing while waiting for the AA.

Mrs Finch's frustration was shared by Bob South, secretary of Wyre Forest Taxi Drivers' Association.

He said: "Somebody has hit them; they stick out too far. There have to be other safety measures they can use.

"There needs to be signage there of some description."

Nick Yarwood, maintenance manager at Wyre Forest Highways Partnership Unit, said careless driving was to blame for the damage - not the bollards.

He added: "If the driver cannot see the bollards then they are not paying suitable attention. They are the right bollards to use in that situation."

The extended kerbs were built as part of a revamp of parking bays along Park Street.
