FARMERS' markets, including monthly ones held in Kidderminster and Bewdley, have been given a national seal of approval.

The National Association of Farmers' Markets has certified Worcestershire markets, assuring customers the produce they buy comes directly from local farmers, producers and bakers.

The standard was introduced amid concerns there was no legal definition of farmers' markets, leading to abuse of the scheme.

Worcestershire County Council trading standards officers have been educating stallholders about the importance of doing business within the law.

Graham Rowberry, enforcement officer for trading standards, said: "It is increasingly important to ensure enterprises such as this are supported to ensure their survival.

"However, it is also critical that they, just like any other retailer of foodstuffs, consider their responsibilities in terms of meeting legislation and other standards."

Janet Yates, co-ordinator of Worcestershire Farmers Market Group, said: "We've been working hard to achieve this certification and are delighted it has been acknowledged.

"We'd urge people, wherever they are in the country, to look out for the certified farmers' markets logo, as it is a national scheme.

"That will give them the reassurance they are shopping from a genuine farmers' market."
