A DECISION on plans for a new house in Broadway which objectors said could set a precedent for development in the village has been deferred by councillors.

The application to demolish part of a stable building in a courtyard at the back of 117 High Street and build a new house was recommended for approval by planning officers.

But members of the development control committee deferred the application last Thursday after objections were received from the parish council, the highways partnership unit and 11 individuals in Broadway.

The Broadway Trust warned that approval of the application would set a precedent for development in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the conservation area around Broadway.

Colin Brant, of the Broadway Trust, told the meeting: "The High Street is the heart of the village.

"With respect this is not a brownfield site, it is a former yard and one within listed premises.

"They (residents) would have to deal with extra vehicular traffic in what is a narrow access at the best of times."

Coun David Noyes added: "I do feel that it is setting a precedent and that it is the wrong thing to do."
