VILLAGERS campaigning to slow down traffic in Norton have started the new year feeling positive that they can achieve goals set out in the first six months of their battle.

Resident Keith Woodall, who set up the Norton Road Safety Campaign last July, said at first their campaign received little attention from Worcestershire County Council.

But he said the group has come on leaps and bounds with support from village residents, the parish council and their county councillor, Clive Holt.

Mr Woodall said they have already succeeded in organising traffic surveys, road marking proposals and liaising with local police.

And, on the advice of the parish council, have formed their own committee to hold meetings.

He added that they were also currently discussing the possibility of having mobile speed traffic monitors in Evesham Road to help slow down traffic.

"The campaign ended on a very positive note with some positive outcomes in the pipeline," he said.

Mr Woodall launched the Norton Road Safety Campaign with a survey of 100 houses in Evesham Road which showed that some residents were considering moving out of the village because of the traffic.

The group demanded traffic calming measures like electronic signs and speed cameras to slow traffic before there was a serious accident.

They even threatened to park their cars on the street rather than driveways to force drivers to slow down or use the A46 bypass.

They said lorries coming from the Redditch direction were using Evesham Road rather than the bypass, as well as buses, motorcyclists and other traffic.
