A CAMPAIGN for the restoration of a rundown century-old Kidderminster fountain has been launched by one of the town's councillors.

James Dudley, who represents Sutton Park on Wyre Forest District Council, has labelled the Richard Eve drinking fountain an "eyesore". He has become increasingly concerned about its future as it has been fenced off and left in a state of serious disrepair for several years.

"The drinking fountain is an excellent example of early 20th century design and is faced with glazed Doulton ware in green, terracotta and bronze," said councillor Dudley.

"It should be an attractive feature, adding to the beauty and character of Brinton Park. Regrettably, it has now become an unstable eyesore."

The fountain was built in 1902 in tribute to leading freemason, Richard Eve. He was also a solicitor and politician. The money funding the fountain's construction was raised by his friends and local freemasons.

"Having raised the matter in full council, I am left with the full impression that the district council is not going to stump up the £45,000 needed to effect repairs and was clearly leaving it to me to do something about it," said councillor Dudley.

"So I have already begun to make contact with the freemasons and the Civic Society but I am also looking for any other local societies or individuals who may be interested in saving this unique memorial.

"I would like to organise a meeting between interested parties and district council officers to find a way forward."
