POLICE are warning Malvern householders to be on their guard against a gang of aggressive workmen offering to resurface residents' driveways.
The warning follows two incidents in Malvern - in Trinity Road and Pickersleigh Road - in which elderly residents were heavily pressured into having work done.
In the first incident workmen pressurised an elderly woman into paying approximately four times the amount of cash she should have paid for resurfacing work to be carried out.
The men originally demanded almost twice as much as the amount finally paid and they took the woman to her bank to obtain the money.
However officials there refused to sanction the withdrawal as they were concerned about the circumstances.
In the second incident, no money was paid and the workmen later reinstated the drive - on which they had begun preparatory work - when police attended.
"We would urge residents not to enter into a contract with anyone knocking on the door or talking to them over the garden fence," said a South Worcestershire Police spokesman.
"People should always use a recognised company from an official directory and, whenever possible, always get written quotations from at least two firms.
"No matter how plausible any un-solicited approaches appear, we would advise residents to always double-check - possibly through a relative, friend or neighbour - before entering into any agreements.
"This applies particularly to elderly residents, some of whom can be easily confused, misled and pressurised."
