A CONCERNED community leader is calling for robust railings be installed on a dangerous stretch of road in Rubery before a child is killed.

Councillor Peter McDonald (Lab-Waseley) says that access from Library Way onto the busy A38 is now easier than ever. Old railings have long gone leaving the stretch of road exposed.

Last year, Cllr McDonald expressed his delight when, after five years of campaigning, the problem finally looked set to be addressed by Worcestershire County Council.

However, months after it was set to be discussed by officers from the county council, Cllr McDonald claims the problem is worse than ever.

"Children can now run straight out from Rubery Library, on Library Way and immediately gain access to the very dangerous dual carriageway. It will not be long before there is a fatality," he warned.

"The county council were supposed to discuss the matter in October, and then take some action but I have heard nothing."

The district councillor added: "I am utterly shocked. This shows the county council's sheer incompetence. They are neglecting the safety of the people of Rubery."

He added that he has sent a letter to the county council head of environmental services, Richard Wiggington, demanding immediate action. "A child will be killed and it will be all the fault of the county council," he said.

A spokesman for the Highways Partnership in Bromsgrove was unavailable for comment.
