REMOVAL of vegetation and installing new warning signs were all part of a £12,000 scheme to improve the safety of a rail crossing.

Bromsgrove's Tory MP Julie Kirkbride officially opened the improved rail crossing, at Sweetpool Lane in Hagley, last Friday.

Network Rail has invested the cash to bring the crossing in line with the latest Health and Safety Executive railway safety principles.

Improvements include:

l Repositioning of whistle boards

l Widening of the existing timber deck to improve access for disabled passengers

l Removal of vegetation and the installation of a fence

l Relocation of warning signs

Miss Kirkbride was joined at the opening ceremony by local district councillors Katie Gall and Chris Scurrell, as well as John Hares, from Network Rail.

John said: "The improvements at Sweetpool Lane level crossing demonstrates Network Rail's commitment to investing in a safer railway system.

"We are delighted to be able to celebrate the hard work that has gone into making the crossing safer for pedestrians and trains," he added.
