REDDITCH Council is looking at continuing to provide street entertainment in the market.

The council's estates and valuation services manager Jim Prendergrast told councillors at an executive committee meeting last Wednesday the entertainers had been well received and had pulled in visitors to the market.

He added: "We have had four goes at providing street entertainment to date.

"There have been mixed feelings from the traders as to whether it has been worthwhile and to get entertainers to come it does cost £300-400 per event but it has always been very well received and has attracted crowds.

"We feel this is worth pursuing.

"We are also thinking about inviting some of the local schools to provide carols in the market around next Christmas, collecting money for their school or for charity."

Mr Prendergrast said it had been just over a year since the market moved to its new location and council officers now believed it was good, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays.

He added: "We are getting to the situation where it is virtually full and are looking at the possibility of having additional stalls.

"But on some of the other days the market it not going to be as successful as it was in Royal Square and we may be considering reducing the number of market days.

"This feeling has come from the market traders as well, particularly in relation to Wednesdays."
