WORCESTER Wolves clinched their first National Basketball League Division One win of the season when they beat the Black Country Bears 94-72 at Stourbridge.

Wolves gave a National League debut to Tom Thornton, while Paul Gerald made a welcome return from injury.

The home side took the early initiative, scoring two opening baskets, but Worcester hit back with Josh Cooprider and Ben Livingston on the scoresheet.

In the second quarter Cooprider and Rick Solvason started to find their range and Robbie Bowen was winning good offensive rebounds. The Bears were committing too many fouls which meant the Wolves were being rewarded with several foul shots that Solvason was happy to capitalise on.

The Bears made a brief comeback towards the end of the first-half but the Wolves stretched their lead to 44-37.

As the home side re-mained in foul trouble, Colin Chiverton was making up for lost time on the bench in the first-half with some excellent back-to-basket moves that the home defence could not stop.

In the closing stages, Cooprider, Solvason and Gerald added to the Worcester score and fittingly it was player-coach Solvason who completed a comfortable victory with two well taken free shots to give the Wolves a fine win.
