A LEADING scientist has won a further honour for his work at QinetiQ in Malvern.

Dr Colin Boyne, of Welland, has been awarded an OBE for his work on high performance sensors for the military in the area of electronic surveillance.

He has worked for QinetiQ and its forerunners, such as the Defence Evaluation Research Agency (DERA), for 25 years.

The expertise that QinetiQ holds in this area means that his team is recognised as world leaders in the field.

Their work is in service not only in the British military but also the American.

The honour follows the award of an MBE to Dr Boyne in 1982 for work in the same area, which was put into use during the Falklands War.

"It's not very often I'm left speechless but this really took me by surprise," he said.

"It's undoubtedly a testament to the achievements of my team over many years.

"Their mix of scientific, technical, engineering and management skills have been instrumental in our being able to create a world-leading position in many areas of electronic surveillance and countermeasures.

"The team has been responsible for many 'world-firsts', and for the introduction of leading-edge technology into service. It's very stimulating to work in such an environment with people so committed to solving real problems of national concern."
