CALLOW End owner Jim Lewis admitted his shock after scooping a prestigious award earlier this week.

The man who watched his horse Best Mate make history at Cheltenham in March was named owner of the year at the annual Horserace Writers Press Association awards.

Lewis has enjoyed a wonderful couple of seasons with Best Mate winning back to back Gold Cups. However, he admitted Monday's award in Derby took him by surprise.

"They went through the nominees for the award and I though to myself, I won't have to make a speech because one of the others is bound to win it!" he said.

"It was a great surprise and I was absolutely thrilled. It has to be up there with the best of them. What it is, though, is recognition for the achievements of trainer Henrietta Knight, Best Mate and Edredon Bleu."
