RICHARD Bates is set to go under the knife to cure a groin problem.

Worcester Rugby Club's powerhouse flanker, who has been dogged by injuries over the past 12 months, will have an operation to repair a torn groin muscle.

The South African now looks set to be out of action until mid-January but coach Andy Keast is hoping to have him back for the clash at Orrell.

"It's nothing serious and hopefully Richard will be back in action in a couple of weeks," said Keast.

Bates started Worcester's match against Penzance and Newlyn last weekend but came off during half-time with a groin problem.

His place for tomorrow's National One clash at Pertemps Bees goes to fit-again Christian Evans, while fellow flanker Gavin Pfister also makes the team after recovering from a shoulder problem.

Mark Gabey returns at lock, while Neil Lyman gets the nod at tight-head over Lee Fortey.

In the backs, Jon Hylton is handed his first league start on the wing because of Duncan Roke's knee injury. Daren O'Leary is switched to full back with Ben Hinshelwood continuing at centre alongside Tommy Hayes.

Team: O'Leary; Hylton, Hinshelwood, Hayes, Davies; Brown, Powell; Windo, Daly, Lyman, Gabey, Gillies, C Evans, Pfister, Hickey.
