TWO thieves stole £400 from a Malvern supermarket after threatening a cashier with a knife.

The thieves entered Somerfield, in Barnards Green Road, at around 9.45pm on Saturday night and purchased a bottle of Ribena. The pair then told the cashier to give them money from the till.

When he said he was unable to open the till, one of the men pulled out a knife and forced the cashier to scan the item again to open it. They took the cash out and left the store.

The 16-year-old cashier pressed the alarm button and rushed outside to jot down the number of the getaway car.

Store manager Sheila Preece said she was very impressed with the teenager's quick reaction. "He acted really quite coolly." she said.

Both men were described as being white, aged between 20 and 25. The man carrying the knife was said to have long side-burns and to have been wearing cream trousers, a baseball cap and possibly a green jumper or coat. The second was 6ft tall, wearing dark blue tracksuit bottoms, a dark jumper and dark blue baseball cap.

A man has been arrested and released on bail.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the robbery to contact them on 08457 444888.
