TAKING a large model of a bridge by train to London is the latest challenge facing a group of young engineers after they impressed judges in a national competition.

The 14 to 16-year-olds will receive a special commendation for their entry in the competition run by Wood for Good and the Young Engineers Clubs of Great Britain.

Six members of Malvern Young Engineers have been invited to display their work at the Institute for Civil Engineers in London on Tuesday and to join other prizewinners on a visit to The London Eye.

Their enjoyment of working with wood had already led them to start an enterprise called WoodGoods before they heard about the competition to design and build a scale model of a wooden bridge.

"We don't enter competitions with a view to winning.

"It's more to do with what we can learn from it," said their leader, Judy Thomas, of Callow End, near Worcester.

"We've been asked to take our scale model, which is about a three feet long and 10 or 12 inches wide," said Mrs Thomas.

"We haven't actually decided how to get it there, but we're a problem-solving group. We'll think of something."
