Every precaution is being taken against a surprise invasion from the enemy (France) on the Isle of Wight. Lord Cavan is ordered not to sleep out of the island. All the Margate packets and fishing boats are ordered, on the suggestion of Mr Pitt, to be fitted up as armed vessels for the purpose of being applied to the defence of our coasts.

A Working party of 50 men has been employed for some days past in raising a mound on the highest point of Coxheath, on which a a fire beacon is to be erected as a signal to Bexleyhill and the London road in case of alarm. The fire beacons throughout the whole of the Eastern district are all ready for lighting.

1903: Albert Fieldhouse (22) of no fixed abode was charged at Worcester Police Court with stealing a pair of trousers, value 3s.11d, from outside the shop of J.M Jones and Co., clothiers, at 11 Bridge Street. Defendant was sent to prison for a month with hard labour.

Dr Edward Elgar is planning to take a long holiday in Italy after the performance of his latest choral work "The Apostles" at the Birmingham Festival.

A Sad fatality is reported from Kempsey as a result of the violent gale which raged in the district on Tuesday. A widow named Ellen Allington, aged 65, who lived in the parish almshouses, was killed by the fall of a large limb from an elm tree standing in Mrs Boucher's orchard adjoining Squire's Walk. Dr Tanner, with help, extricated the unfortunate woman from under the large tree branch and found that her head and face had been completely battered in. He said death must have been instantaneous. Deceased had been on her way to the Post Office with a letter.

1953: The Worcestershire Record Office at the Shirehall has acquired its earliest record so far. It is a parchment of about 1135, in perfect condition and bearing the Great Seal of King Stephen. The subject matter deals with a gift from the King to the monks and Prior of Worcester of certain lands in the county. This interesting document is part of the Lechmere Collection from Hanley Castle.

RAF Sergeant Frank Spencer of Woodward Close, Pershore, has been presented with the British Empire Medal (Military), awarded him in the Queen's Coronation Honours List. He has spent the past seven years at Defford working on safety equipment for all types of aircraft.

There was an excellent entry of more than 260 for the annual show of the Worcester City and District Domestic Rabbit Club, held in the Cromwell Street Hall, Worcester last Saturday.
