MARK Wilson produced a string of fine saves in Worcester Hockey Club's 1-0 victory over Shrewsbury.

Worcester, already buoyant from beating leaders Coventry last week, have now moved from a lowly ninth place to fourth in the Coaching Solutions Midlands Premier League.

Shrewsbury pressed hard early on and Wilson needed to be at his best to keep their threat at bay.

After the first ten minutes Worcester began to impress themselves on the visitors but didn't take the lead until after the break when a Chris Adams penalty corner was deflected into the net by a hapless defender.

South African, Henrico Murphy should have extended the score several times but his first touch let him down after excellent work from Marvin Bam.

Deserved

Captain Ian Ewers said: "I think on balance we deserved that, but it was tight. Both sides created the chances and a 5-3 scoreline would have reflected the match."

Despite the fierce rivalry between the sides it was a quiet first quarter before Worcester finally burst into action and broke the deadlock through the in-form Tim Johnson.

Jeremy Drake, who was impressive throughout, was savagely upended in the 'D' to cue Sprague to step up to convert his first of three penalty flicks.

The hosts managed a late consolation, which was hard luck on goal keeper Richard Scott who made several death defying saves earlier in the game.
