PROTESTERS in Worcester marked International Human Rights Day with a masked demonstration outside the Magistrates Court.

The women, from the Worcestershire County Forum Against Domestic Violence, aimed to raise awareness about violence and abuse in the home.

The masks were intended to symbolise the need to protect women in the family courts, but also served a practical purpose by concealing the identities of several refuge workers who attended the protest.

"Christmas is a time when families are especially close, but it is also an extremely busy time for the Domestic Violence helpline," said One Women's Aid worker, who cannot be named for safety reasons.

The women carried placards protesting against current laws which allow abusive parents contact with their children, regardless of the youngsters' wishes.

The Domestic Violence helpline is open 24 hours a day on 0800 980 3331.
