REDDITCH police are asking people to think ahead as the Christmas party season gets under way.

Crime Risk Manager Pc Stan Baker has reminded people a few moments' forethought can make a real difference to personal safety and enjoyment.

"If you're planning an evening out, decide beforehand if you intend to drink.

"If so, arrange a lift home with a friend or order a taxi in advance."

And he stressed the need for people to ensure they used a reputable taxi company and they check the taxi is the one they ordered before getting in.

"If you are using public transport, avoid isolated bus stops or train stations and always sit near other people or close to the driver," said Pc Baker.

"If you plan to walk home, remember there's safety in numbers and avoid short-cuts through dark alleys, parks or across waste ground.

"Don't be tempted to hitchhike or get a lift from strangers.

"Carry a personal alarm and remember to carry it in your hand if you're feeling vulnerable.

"Keep your handbag zipped up and remember to carry it close to you, if someone attempts to grab it, let it go. If you hang on, you might get hurt.

"But do consider the safety of your possessions during the evening.

"Keep your bag where you can see it and a purse or wallet in an inside or front pocket rather than back pocket, which is easier for a thief to snatch."

He also advised revellers to carry as little cash as possible, to use mobile phones discreetly and to put coats and jackets in a cloakroom, rather than hanging them on the back of a chair.
