ORIGINAL plans to move a town centre taxi rank have been ditched after a U-turn by Redditch Council on Monday night.

The proposal to move the rank from Unicorn Hill to Bates Hill met with safety concerns and strong objections from taxi drivers, who took the dramatic step to strike in protest one Saturday night.

Taxi drivers have continued to use Unicorn Hill despite the fact a temporary order allowing it to operate as a rank ran out some weeks ago.

Conservative councillors were split over the new location for the taxi rank and some felt it was fairer to allow shoppers to use Unicorn Hill for short stay parking as it was originally intended.

But after a heated debate and failed pleas for an alternative solution councillors agreed to keep the taxi rank in Unicorn Hill and have short stay parking for shoppers in Bates Hill.

The new decision will now go out for consultation for a further 28 days.
