CARING volunteers are urgently needed to help patients in Bromsgrove readjust to everyday life in their own homes after a spell in hospital.

The service, which is coming under increased pressure as more people make use of it, is called Red Cross Home from Hospital.

A little over 16 years ago, the British Red Cross piloted the scheme, then one of the first in Britain, in the Worcester area.

Today it covers the whole of the county and is expanding rapidly, especially in the Bromsgrove district - although relatively few people know it exists.

So far this year 825 people in the county have been helped to settle back into their own homes.

Service manager Gabby Beddows said: "We are desperately in need of volunteers in the Bromsgrove area to keep up with local demand."

Volunteers offer support, encouragement, companionship and practical help. This can include shopping, light housework, posting letters and getting prescriptions.

"The aim is to assist elderly and vulnerable patients regain their independence and remain in their own homes," she added.

The service is available to anyone living in Worcestershire who has recently left hospital. It is provided free for four to six weeks after discharge.

Gabby said volunteers need to be 18 or over and preferably able to drive. But above all they need to have a caring and friendly nature.

Training and expenses are provided for volunteers.

Anyone wanting to offer their services should contact Gabby on 01527 570879.
