CHILDREN at Charford First School enjoyed a spot of spadework when they cleaned up the school pond.

The school received a £300 grant from the Duckworth Trust to redevelop the pond but it was the youngsters themselves who carried out the work.

The pupils rolled up their sleeves, donned their wellies and got stuck in on the project, which was carried out with advice from Bob Green, of the Bishopswood Environmental Centre.

By the end of the day the work was complete and the pond will now become a haven for wildlife, which will help the children study science and geography.

"The children are thrilled with it," said Jo Perkin, the school's environmental co-ordinator. "They did all the digging, shovelling and landscaping themselves. They really enjoyed it."
