Perfect weather conditions for Worcester Triathlon Club's annual Aquathlon race produced fast race times.

The race was held at the Sansome Walk Swimming Pool and Leisure Centre, Worcester.

The distance was a 400m pool swim followed by a two lap 5km road run over a tough hilly course - twice up Rainbow Hill took a toll on many of the not so fit competitors.

A good field of over 120 entered the race, but only 96 completed the full race course.

Worcester Tri Club members had some success as follows:

Michelle Parsons was fourth in the female open in 31.27; Les Bailey won the 60-69 category in 34.28; Gail Flanaghan finished second female veteran 37.29; Mike Hedges was second in the 50-59 category in 31.17; and Simon Milner clocked 34.05.

The overall winner was Michael Cornes of Birmingham Uni Tri Club in a superb time of 23.52 over two minutes ahead of second place Jason Humm of Monmouth Tri Club in 26.07. Scott Orchard from Brighton, was third in 26.13.

The overall lady winner was Celia Brown of BRAT in 30.05 with Kirsty Roberston second in 31.16 and Caroline Ward third in 31.23.

The male junior winner was Jon Stedman of Nottingham University in 27.18 and the female junior was Claire Hodgson in 28.35, another excellent time.

For Mike Stedman, it was his first time as Race Director and a first-class job was achieved.

The race also incorporates the Midland Series and this was the final race of the series which was good news for the club as Flanaghan was named runner-up in the ladies' open race and was awarded her trophy.

In the evening following the race the club held its annual dinner which was followed by the club's award ceremony.

Recipients were as follows: Female Triathlete of the Year, Ruth Heatley; Male Triathlete of the Year, Kevin May; Arran Stephens Trophy, Simon Barringer.

The awards are not only presented on sporting prowess but also on what a member contributes to the club in other spheres.
