REDDITCH residents whose first language is not English can now access more council services thanks to the Ethnic Access Link (EAL) 'signposting' service.

Redditch Council subscribed to the signposting service in July and so far, it has helped a number of people who do not have English as their first language make the most out of council services and documents.

It allows the council to print the signpost logo on council documents in a number of languages directing people to EAL for assistance.

It is also a very effective means of helping people who do not read English to access information about council services.

Since its introduction in July, a number of requests have been received, highlighting the success and importance of the service.

One caller who spoke English but could not read it saw the signpost on a housing leaflet.

The caller had a disabled child and was unaware of all the help available and had therefore missed out on many services. EAL was able to put the caller in touch with the relevant person in the housing service.

The signpost can be found on a number of council documents and additional documents are also having the signpost attached.

Any residents who do not speak or read English can contact EAL on 01905 25121 for help in interpreting any council documents.
