A REPORT into the debacle surrounding the Studley Leisure Centre refurbishment will not be made public - prompting anger from certain Stratford councillors.

Members of a scrutiny committee meet today to discuss a long list of 'lessons to be learned' after the Pool Road facility was closed for major repairs arising from last year's redevelopment.

The Liberal Democrats say up to £600,000 has been spent in creating a new management contract for the centre and council tax payers have a right to see the report by independent consultants Ridgeways.

Stratford Council is pursuing legal action for compensation for the faulty repair work from its original contractor Pearce Construction.

Despite the secrecy surrounding the findings, councillors on today's scrutiny committee will still be presented with a separate report by officers on the lessons to be drawn.

It says the council should implement more 'effective monitoring' of building work being undertaken by contractors.

But the officers' report also states that the 'strategic basis' for the original project was 'not strong'.

Liberal Democrat leader and Studley councillor Hazel Wright said: "The residents of Studley have a right to know what has happened here.

"We were unhappy with some of the decisions which were made at the time and we think someone needs to be called to account."

Her colleague Councillor Peter Moorse said he was concerned the report contained issues about safety which are of public interest.

A council spokesman said officers are withholding the report from public scrutiny because it contains sensitive contractual and commercial details.

Yesterday, council lawyers issued a memo explaining why none of the report will be publicly released.
