A HEADteacher has applauded plans for a controversial new cycleway to take a different route.

After months of discussions and objections over Ombersley Way cycle path, outside St Joseph's School, headteacher Kate Hill is delighted at the new proposals.

The fresh plan for Chawson includes taking the cycleway along Blake Avenue with a crossing at Celvestune Way. The route is set to be extended, along the grass verge, to the new crossing in Ombersley Way opposite Westacre Middle School.

Kate Hill was one of those who attended the meeting. West Acre Middle School was invited but it was unable to attend

"It was a very successful meeting together with Droitwich Spa High School," said Kate Hill.

"It is now planned that the cycle path will go along the Eastern side of Ombersley Way and will be a safer route for those pupils cycling to school."

County councillor Pam Davey (Con) said: "The controlled crossing of Celvestune is something residents have wanted for a long time and although this route will be more expensive, I believe it will be better for residents and safer for the young cyclists.

"Clearly the temporary cycle markings outside St Joseph's are causing problems and it is essential to bring forward our long term plans to extend the route within the grass verge immediately."

Consultation is now taking place on these new proposals. Details are on display at the One Stop Shop in High Street, Droitwich.

The alterations will mark the finishing touches to Worcestershire County Council's £60,000 Safer Routes to School initiative in Droitwich Spa.
