A SPECIAL preview launch of An Oasis of Delight, a new edition of the history of the Birmingham Botanical Gardens by Phillada Ballard, is to be held at the Gardens in Edgbaston next Monday.

The author will be signing special copies of this definitive history of one of Birmingham's enduring attractions between 1 and 6pm.

It was first published in 1983 and this second edition highlights the major improvement projects at the gardens during the last 20 years. These include the major refurbishment in 1989 including renovating and extending the Garden's prestigious banquet and conference suites, the Study Centre, the Lawn Aviary and Rose Garden. Other developments include the Alpine Yard, the National Bonsai Collection and the Children'' Discovery Garden.

Phillada describes those developments and how exciting strategies have maintained the gardens at the forefront of Birmingham's cultural development.

and its reputation in the botanical world.

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens, opened in 1832, are the only provincial botanical gardens in Britain still owned and administered by a private society. Phillada highlights the development and strategy of the Birmingham Botanical and Horticultural Society and the Gardens, which were designed by JC Loudon who was a great promoter of education in the botanical sciences and horticulture.

The book is published December 2003 to commemorate the 175th anniversary of the Birmingham Botanical and Horticultural Society, formed in 1829. "An Oasis of Delight" is lavishly illustrated in colour and black and white and is a must for anyone interested in historic gardens and horticulture.

The book will be on sale at the Gardens' own shop at £18.95 and advance orders can be made through the shop. However, a limited number of copies will be available at the preview launch at the special price of £14.50. For further information please contact Linda Keen on 0121 454 1860.
