WE read in the Evening News (Friday, November 7) that Mike Foster wants to replace the country's six district councils with unitary authorities.

Why has he suddenly started this one again? I would suggest he is under orders from John Prescott to start "stirring the pot" since only two days previously we read in the national Press that his push for regional government is now starting in earnest and unitary councils are a necessary forerunner to regional government.

How the stealth of this dictatorial Government reveals itself. Regional referendums are to be held in the north of England where Labour feels most confident of being able to win.

They have published a booklet entitled You Say in support of regional government - but of course there is nothing giving the objections. This government must be stopped in its inexorable efforts to destroy this country and its constitution making us just a group of regions within a federal state of Europe.

Tony Blair has already told us we cannot have a referendum on giving up our constitutions but that he will decide. Such dictatorship must never be tolerated in the UK.

I am confident that the vast majority of people in Worcestershire do not want their district councils eliminated, and I trust they will make their wishes known to Mike Foster and the other MPs within the county.

It is no good crying over spilled milk. The will of the people, not dictatorial dogma, can and must win, but that will must be made known at full volume - not silence.

E F SHOWELL,

Worcester.
