A LOWERING of the voting age from 18 to 16 has been backed by councillors.

Stourport Town Council was responding to a consultation paper from the Electoral Commission suggesting the move.

Mayor Stephen Clee used his casting vote to pass the proposal by eight votes to seven at the council's meeting last week.

He said: "It is difficult to explain to a 16-year-old that they can leave school, start work and pay national taxation but we do not allow them the opportunity to vote.

"Time has come for this anomaly to be rectified and I support the proposal."
