JOHN Callow made some very interesting observations over the current war in Iraq (You Say, Saturday, October 4).

According to a recent Pipeline Story on Radio Four, there are substantial oil and gas reserves in the Caucasus.

True to form, America is presently involved in aiding and abetting Georgia and Azerbaijan with military aid in their squabble with neighbouring Chechnya. US foreign policy is also keeping Turkey sweet, to allow the oil pipelines run through their country uninterrupted.

One is bound to wonder what will ultimately happen, once this US military interference in the Caucasus goes pear-shaped.

Perhaps Britain - in maintaining her special relations with the US - will be expected to tag along on Uncle Sam's tailcoat once again, while American flexes her military muscles to destabilise another region.
