CHELTENHAM Town Hall will provide a rare opportunity to see four of the best vocal groups of the '60s performing on stage together.

The Barron Knights (pictured above), The Fortunes, Marmalade and The Tremeloes will perform some of their greatest hits in Call Up The Groups later this month.

The show will feature more than 30 massive hits, including Silence is Golden, Ob-la-di-ob-la-da, You've Got Your Troubles and Call Up The Groups.

The Barron Knights, who formed in Leighton Buzzard in 1960, are one of few acts to have toured with both The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

Their first real taste of fame came when they supported The Beatles at their Christmas show at the Finsbury Park Astoria in London in 1963, followed by chart success in 1964 with Call Up The Groups.

The group, with three original members, is still touring around the world and will appear alongside The Fortunes, the Birmingham group who rose to fame in the mid-60s with their sophisticated orchestration, dual lead vocals and counter-melodies.

The successful harmony group are still in demand worldwide, four decades after the release of Caroline, used as the signature tune for the pirate radio station of the same name.

They will appear alongside Essex band The Tremeloes, now made up of Joe Gillingham, Dave Munden, Davey Freyer and Rick Westwood, and Scottish rock band Marmalade, who still regularly tour Europe and Australia.

The show promises some surprises, including four drummers singing in harmony and four guitarists trading licks in one rocking instrumental.

The concert is due to take place on Thursday, October 23, at 7.30pm, and tickets, priced £7.50 to £16.50, are available from the box office on 01242 227979.
