WYRE Forest's marvellous band delighted their audience with music from the show/film Brassed Off, which they have appeared in on stage several times.

From the show was the march Florentina, the glorious Clog Dance, and my own favourite - Danny Boy, in a lovely arrangement by Percy Grainger.

Leader Neil Fishbourne's cornet solos in Memory from Cats, and Love Changes Everything, from Aspects of Love were absolutely beautiful.

In this extremely varied evening, we were introduced to each of the instruments by musical director David Maplestone, who is a superb host, his warmth and enthusiasm being infectious.

The band demonstrated its versatility, with music from the traditional brass band sound, such as in the march Death or Glory, through a multi-rhythm Singin' in the Rain to the gentler numbers, including I do it for you, which the band played at the wedding of one of its members, just three weeks previously.

Stourport even has its own Victor Meldrew (aka John Moore) who, suitably attired in mac and cap, played One Foot in the Grave on his tuba, and three trombonists delighted with I Will Follow Him from Sister Act.

I love the band's version of Offenbach's Can Can, which would leave any danceuse breathless, and they even treated us to the Floral Dance, when their MD left them to their own devices. Another real toe-tapper was a lively Lincolnshire Poacher, which I haven't heard for years.

I do not like the theme music of Jurassic Park but they played it with their usual panache, and we ended this most entertaining concert with Land of Hope and Glory.

What a pity more people didn't come to the concert - this super band deserves a much bigger audience. VJS
