LEONARD Bernstein's famous musical is one of the most difficult to stage, and I have seen some utter disasters, with singers unable to follow the complicated music, and ensemble numbers a shambles with so many people on stage.

This was not the case on Monday night.

This production is a credit to Carpet Trades Operatic Society, to producer and choreographer Cheryl Skidmore, and musical director David Morgan.

David had re-orchestrated the entire score to accommodate a small ensemble, and they were spot on from start to finish, giving excellent accompaniment to the singers, who coped admirably with the difficult timings.

The fight scenes were superbly choreographed and the dance at the gym was impressive.

Darren Richards was excellent as Tony, in particular singing Maria beautifully and, as Maria, Julia Hampton shone in her first lead for the society.

Jill Parmenter stood out as Anita and her second act duet with Maria sent tingles down my spine. Julian Richards was reliable as ever as Bernardo and recovered well when he almost dropped Jill!

There were a few prompts, particularly at the start, but they could probably be put down to first night jitters. The reprise of Tonight, featuring the entire cast, where they sing across each other, was absolutely wonderful, all holding together superbly, and I must comment on the beautiful voice of Lynn Fox, singing Somewhere as Teresita.

One of my favourite numbers is Gee Officer Krupke and I was not disappointed, each of the "The Jets" playing their part brilliantly.

I cannot name everyone in the show, but they all played their part well. I was expecting a second curtain call so we could really show our appreciation of the cast, but David and his musicians, deservedly, got their own round of tumultuous applause.
