Barnardo's is appealing to Redditch people to become short-term carers for disabled children.

The Worcestershire Short Breaks project is the only service of its kind in the county which provides community-based breaks to disabled children who live with their families.

Carers can provide as little as a few hours each month - which can still make a huge difference to families and children.

A spokesman said: "We have about 20 children waiting for the service in Redditch and Bromsgrove.

"We don't distinguish between those two areas but most do live in Redditch.

"They're mainly in the five-15 age range and have varying disabilities.

"Some have physical disabilities, others are able physically but have learning difficulties.

"About half need overnight carers, the other half would either like to be taken out to do activities in the community or need to be looked after in their own homes while their parents go out.

"We're keen to attract all kinds of carers but as we have a number of older boys waiting, we'd like to attract more male carers who are able to help them access leisure activities."

Barnardo's project worker Ros Lunt said: "Carers just do normal things with the children like visit the park and spend time at home playing games but it gives the children a chance to meet people, including other children, outside their own family.

"It also gives parents a well- earned break and the chance to take part in activities with brothers and sisters who may not have a disability."
