THERE was plenty to discuss at the September meeting, not only the wonderful summer but also holidays, a day at Worcester Porcelain and a guided walk around Worcester City followed by a delicious buffet at the Talbot, all organised by the WI.

The much talked-about Calendar Girls is now showing at cinemas and names were taken of those wishing to go and see it.

Interested people were asked to support the bowling team for the new season and also for ringing hand bells - practise is in progress.

The speaker for the evening was Mr Maskell, who gave an insight into the development and success story of WH Smith, starting from a handcart delivery of newspapers some 200 years ago to the international business of today.

There are now some 553 shops in 12 countries, employing 31,000 people. For the first 180 years, the company was managed by a member of the Smith family but in 1972, David Smith retired and the company is now run by a board of directors with an elected chairman.
