Redditch heroine Lynsey Walters - who tackled a knife-wielding maniac as he stabbed a bus passenger 12 times - has been recognised as one of West Mercia Constabulary's Good Citizens of the Year.

Lynsey, 18, was one of the runners-up at the awards ceremony on Thursday but beforehand, she was rewarded with a makeover and free shopping spree by the Kingfisher Centre.

She was invited for a makeover at Boots, followed by a shopping trip to Debenhams to choose the perfect outfit for her big evening - a Jasper Conran suit.

Lynsey said: "It was great fun choosing the outfit and I'm really pleased with my suit. I really appreciate everything that everyone has done for me."

But all the attention was well deserved following the horrific attack by two youths on the bus passenger in February 2002.

Lynsey took on the youths and she herself was knocked out at one stage.

Daniel Hinton, of Fenton Close, was given 10 years' detention for the attack.

Other stores who recognised Lynsey with gifts included Shoe Network, Woolworths, WH Smith, Allders and Argos.

At Thursday's police ceremony, she received £50 and a presentation pen set.
